Gwangju Metropolitan City is the sixth largest city in South Korea. Gwangju is a designated metropolitan city under the direct control of the central government's Home Minister. The city was also the capital of South Jeolla Province until the provincial office moved to the southern village of Namak, Muan in 2005.

Gwangju has a long tradition of loyalty and justice and political conscience. Many local residents have given their lives to the defense of their country, whether from foreign invasion or internal upheaval. Many of the nation's democratic movements had their roots in the area, including the March 1 Independence Movement (1919) and the May 18 Democratic Uprising (1980). The region is also famous for its abundance of agricultural and marine products.

Gwangju has been a center for collecting and trading abundant agricultural products produced in vast fields, and diverse seafood caught from the southwestern coast of Korea. Gwangju has a highly-developed cuisine culture as it has been long called the home of Korean food due to its variety of foods with delicious and rich tastes.

People instantly think of Gwangju when they hear of traditional kimchi (fermented vegetable dish). Based on a long culinary tradition, Gwangju has been hosting the Gwangju Kimchi Festival every year of October to promote the excellent quality of traditional Korean kimchi to the world and commercialize kimchi as a tourist product.
